Since 2012, The Wine Merchant has carried out the biggest and most in-depth annual survey of the UK independent wine trade.
The responses we get help all of us – merchants, suppliers, producers and the editorial team here at the magazine – build up a detailed understanding of all that’s happening in our industry.
Last year, more than 200 independents took part. It would be amazing to hit a similar level in 2025.
Once again our survey partner is Hatch Mansfield, which is kindly offering mixed cases of its wines to five survey participants selected at random.

How long does it take to complete the survey?
We’d recommend allowing 15 minutes or so.
Who sees my responses?
Just the editorial team at The Wine Merchant. Every answer is treated in the strictest confidence and not shared. There are opportunities to make on-the-record comments, but unless you give us explicit permission to use your words, we won’t.
Do I have to answer every question?
No, you can skip anything that you feel doesn’t apply to your business or which you’d rather not answer. There are questions about turnover and other financials, but these figures are averaged out to give us the numbers we’re looking for. There’s no question of us publishing individual responses.
Can I do the survey anonymously?
Yes, if you like, though we always prefer it if we know where the responses have come from. And by giving your name you’ll be entered into the prize draw.
When do you publish the results?
In the March and April editions of The Wine Merchant, and online.
