Founded in 2015 by winemaker Nikos Karatzas, Oenops—a name that translates as “Wine Face”—has carved out a distinctive place in the Greek wine scene. Instead of owning vineyards, Karatzas has built a network of partnerships with growers across the country, sourcing fruit from cool-climate sites and mature vines that highlight the character of indigenous grape varieties.
This approach allows Oenops Wines to champion authenticity: wines that are fruit-driven, transparent, and expressive of place, rather than products of heavy-handed winemaking. Flexibility is central to their philosophy. Each lot is treated individually, adjusted and refined as needed, with the goal of crafting elegant, drinkable wines that retain their identity.
The focus on native varieties such as Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Vidiano, Xinomavro, Limniona, and Mavroudi underscores the diversity and potential of Greece’s vineyards. Working closely with specific plots not only preserves regional character but also gives the team deeper insight into the land, informing future vintages.
The results have not gone unnoticed. International wine critics have awarded Oenops Wines consistently high scores, with standout performances from the Vidiano (95 points, Decanter), Limniona (96 points, Decanter), and the lively Apla Rosé (90 points, Decanter). These accolades reflect both the winery’s precision and its commitment to pushing Greek wine onto a broader stage.
At its core, Oenops Wines is about rethinking tradition while respecting it—delivering varietal wines that are as contemporary and dynamic as Greece’s evolving wine culture.
