The Wine Merchant Top 100 is our annual competition for wines that are exclusive to independent wine merchants.
Its other point of difference is that all the judges are independents themselves.
This year we’re running things a little differently. It wasn’t possible to assemble our judges in the usual place on April 1, so instead we’ve worked out a new system that involves judges tasting the wines in their own workplaces or indeed homes.
The wines that make it through the first round – in which they will be assessed by two separate judges – will then proceed to a second round, where another group of independent judges will put the wines through their paces.
The wines that perform best will form this year’s Top 100, with the rest of the second-round wines being awarded Highly Commended status.
We’ll be unveiling the winning wines in the usual Winners’ Supplement, mailed to every specialist independent in the land. This year, for the first time, we’ll also be creating a bespoke website so that consumers as well as the trade can read about the winners – and where to buy them.
Watch this space for updates.
